Cultural Heritage needs Continuous Care

With the project “CH needs CC” we address the challenges related to the maintenance of built cultural heritage, focusing on public art and culturally significant buildings that are regularly used by the public and their decorated surfaces (wall paintings, stone or stucco decorations). This cultural heritage, so important for the quality of the spaces we live in (Baukultur), is fragile and vulnerable.

Churches, houses, public spaces and their decorations are exposed to many risks such as: vandalism, public use and environmental factors (temperature, rain and wind) which cause deterioration and endanger their condition. Mounting risk factors associated with climate change (in particular heavy rain and hailstorms) make it even more important to ensure that this heritage is regularly cared for and kept in good condition.

Positive and sustainable results can only be achieved with a preventive, long-term approach that includes regular maintenance. Local , urgent interventions carried out only after damage occurs do not bring the same benefits, lead to the loss of original materials and their value and, over time, are more expensive than regular inspections and maintenance.

Goal

Encouraging the adoption and implementation of maintenance plans, considering the legislative and economic framework, the methodological approach, the role of owners and the professional and technical skills.

Method

To achieve the desired transformative outcomesthe project adopts the Living Labs approach, with workshops and activities that actively involve public and private owners, heritage authorities, professionals, cultural associations and educational institutes. The presence of external partners ensures that measures are developed and implemented effectively topromote the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage across broad sectors of society.
